Reading upside-down
20 January 10

Brioni prefers to read books upside down.
Does anyone have any experience with a child preferring to look at books upside-down? I don’t know whether to be concerned (dyslexia?) or blasé about Brioni’s habit. Sometimes I tell her to turn the book around, but other times I just let it go.

I’m a web designer and have no medical background to speak of. However, I would have a Doctor check Brioni and her preference out. Images on the retina are naturally upside down mirror images and one’s brain processes them so that they seem the right way up and left is on the left. I would want to find out if there was something going on that interfered with this process in her.

We were actually told at Uni. (when I studied Education) that this is a completely normal stage of children becoming familiar with books. It doesn’t yet matter to them/her that the book is upside down.
I dare say that very soon she will correct herself and have the book around the other way. Just a stage of learning how books work…

They say when a man does it, he’s just trying to attract a woman’s attention. :) But many people do it, apparently with text, and still get post-grad degrees. May or may not later be related to dyslexia or dysgraphia. This thread indicates people do it simply because they personally find reading easier that way!
And in the Islamic schools it is frequent because the children copy to their slates what they see the teacher sitting on the floor facing them is writing or has written.

I occasionally do this because it is ‘harder’ for me to read upside down. it is good to exercise the brain, no?
