After working madly all week for the no-show house-buyer, we decided to take a break this weekend — ostensibly for the kids, who have stayed home all week, but also for David and me, who are bone-tired.

Sometimes it’s hard to think of things to do that are interesting, but also free. (Let’s face it: going to the park is not that much fun for adults…) But a buzzing in the air reminded me that we are not that far from the local model airplane club, and they welcome visitors.

I packed sandwiches and we enjoyed a picnic lunch in the shade of a breezy shelter.

There was a variety of sizes of airplanes on display.

Friends M + C joined us at the club and generously shared their own picnic lunch.

David took the girls around for a closer look at some of the planes. The owners seemed relaxed to have us there and delighted in talking about their planes' features.

All the planes operators were men — which makes me wonder: why don't women get involved in a hobby like this?
