Garden party, October 2008

We’ve been having people from church over for meals in order to get to know everyone, and today we invited a family with young boys over. The weather has been delightful, so I set up some tables in the shade and offered a buffet-style meal serving rice-paper rolls.

I set out a bowl of water to dip the rice paper into and laid out small plates of chicken, bean sprouts, carrot, beetroot, snow peas, capsicum, mushrooms and rice noodles as filler options. The main trick was to lay out the rice circles on a wet cloth while applying the fillings so the rice paper didn’t stick to the plate.

I also made a Hoisin-based dipping sauce, which was a real hit. Everyone had their own dipping sauce bowls so they could feel free to double-dip (considered a fatal social faux-pas).

Vietnamese dipping sauce

  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons soy Sauce
  • Crushed peanuts (to serve)

The girls loved playing with the older boys. You can see completed rice-paper rolls on their plates. They also had their own little dipping bowls.
