Calista, 4 months old, August 2008
I rubbed olive oil onto Calista's head to soften the cradle cap so it could be brushed off. She now smells like fresh salad dressing.

Today, while I was performing routine maintenance on my latest baby, I started thinking about the act of anointing with oil and wondered why it doesn’t happen so much today.

The Bible appears to be quite clear:

Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. (James 5:14)

Mark 6 also speaks about Jesus’ disciples anointing the sick with oil and healing them.

With such clear instructions being laid out in the Bible, why isn’t a phone call to the elders our first response to illness?

Hmmmm… something to think about.
