Beautiful Brioni at 2 months
David and Brioni, October 06. It was quite cool at our beach campsite, hence the warm clothing.

At 8 weeks of age, we changed our daughter’s name from Stephanie (‘Essie’) to Brioni.

This girl’s name is pronounced Bree-OH-nee. It is of Greek origin: 20th century flower name coinage: a vine (Greek ‘bryonia’) native to Europe with large leaves and small flowers.

We went camping on North Stradbroke Island in the middle of October. David had some vinyl to install in a house on the island, so I came along for the ride. Aïcha really enjoyed the beach, and we didn’t receive many complaints from Brioni, either.

While camping, I read Ian McEwan’s novel Atonement, which features a girl named ‘Briony’. When I suggested the name to David, he liked it right away. After a week of trying the name out, we decided to re-name our daughter Brioni.

Atonement is currently being made into a film starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy, so expect to see a lot more Brionys popping up everywhere. However, remember we had the name first!
