…Garrison Keillor.

One of my favourite listening pleasures is A Prairie Home Companion‘s Garrison Keillor’s radio show. I listen via Radio National’s website, often when I need to do some banal housework.

The last show I just listened to (from December 9), was so funny I wanted to share it with you. Have a listen.

Here’s Billy Collins’ poem ‘Oh my God’ that featured on the show.

Not only in church and nightly by their bedsides
Do young girls pray these days
Wherever they go, prayer is woven into their talk
Like a bright thread of awe —
Even in the pedestrian mall
Outbursts of praise spring unbidden from their glossy lips.

You can read some more from Billy Collins here.

This is the only time of year that I hear praise songs in the supermarket, and I wonder about the people who sing Christmas carols: do they ever think about the words they sing?

Like past years, we will let Christmas pass us by without a ripple. Aïcha hasn’t realised its cultural significance, so it will just be a quiet day at home (though David will probably get some work done).

The only exception to our self-imposed Christmas boycott is my work. I’ve selected and chosen a number of exquisite presents from Etsy sellers for my colleagues. It was a delight to select the handmade gifts for them, I look forward to presenting them tomorrow at a special lunch we’ll share together.
