Mornings are chilly here in New Zealand, and the best way to warm up quickly is with a hot breakfast. Porridge warms us by raising the temperature inside the truck as well as inside our bodies, and our girls love it.

Aisha helps by stirring the cooking porridge. It doesn't take very long before the oatmeal is ready to eat. Although we enjoy the warmth from the small flame, we also open the window when cooking inside our truck to provide extra ventilation.

We add fruit to the porridge — dried coconut or sultanas — and garnish it with brown sugar. It goes down like a treat.

Inside our truck, we don't have a proper place to sit and eat, and yet that doesn't seem to matter when the food is yummy.
