One of the peculiarities of domestic life here in New Zealand is the common shower tap. It seems to us that the favourite model among Kiwis is a mixing dial — a device that I haven’t seen in any other part of the world.

The shower dial reminds me of a combination lock — if you don't get the right combination, your shower is just not as pleasant as it could be!

Many of the shower dials we’ve seen are made by Topliss, an engineering company located on the South Island. I don’t know if they are very popular in other parts of the world, but these shower dials are installed in most of the homes that we’ve visited throughout New Zealand. They allow you to change the temperature but not the flow of the water.

Have you seen a shower dial before?
