Loosening the binds on someone we love

In the Biblical story of Lazarus, we see a beautiful picture of our loving duty as ministers of reconciliation. We were dead — in the grave of our sin and ignorance. When we heard the voice of the Christ — God’s Anointed One sent to waken us — we arose.

However, we stumble from our tomb, still wrapped in the graveclothes — unable to see, unable to function freely. Although we are alive, we are still bound by laws, obligations, and sin.

Jesus says to the people standing around watching the miracle of Lazarus’ resurrection, Loose him and let him go and it is these friends who loosen the bonds that finally set us free.

Once we ourselves are truly free, we are called — as ministers of reconciliation — to set others free from those things that hinder them from pursing an abundant life in God. What a glorious pursuit! Spreading the freedom, spreading the love!

Lazarus unwound

By David Batteau, recorded by First Call

On a bright new clear blue morning
What a crazy sight to see
Wakes up trippin’ over his grave clothes
Boy, that sure sounds a lot like me

Lazarus unwound
What a day for a true believer
Lazarus unwound

Follow the voice of my salvation
I’m still tied up head to toe
God send me brothers and sisters
To loose me and let me go

Like Lazarus unwound
What a day for a true believer
Lazarus unwound

So I’m alive again
And gonna be set free
With a little help, my friend
I’m gonna walk
I’m gonna run
I’m gonna see

Lazarus unwound
What a day for a true believer
Lazarus unwound

Are you free? If so, in the name of Jesus — the Divine Nature that inhabits us — set others free also.
